The Big Barge Art Centre is dedicated to bringing exciting new art projects to the islands for the community and visitors to be involved in. We have had many amazing experiences over the last few years working in collaboration with inspiring mainland and local artists.
Our last community art project entitled ‘Art Adrift’ was the dynamic collaboration of three artists and a remote community whose lives are connected to the oceans ebb and flow. Artists Cara Ratajczak, Sandy McKendrick and Emma Washer explored the islands nautical culture – collecting-constructing and creating.
Using skills learnt in traditional local vessel construction and with collections of flotsam and jetsam found on the beach, we worked with the community combining weaving, carving, binding, printing and natural dyeing. We created a fleet of fantastic sculpted vessels that kept evolving with each tidal surge as new materials were washed onto shore to be used in the making.
